Research / Oil spills

The Baltic Sea has a very high amount of sea traffic, and some of the main shipping routes pass right through important seabird feeding - and very close to important breeding areas. To the west of the Karlsö Islands, there is a shipping route where 15 000 ships pass every year. Close to Hoburg (outside Gotland's southern tip) there is another even bigger route with 40 000 ships per year. The Karlsö Islands have the Baltic Sea's largest colonies of Razorbills and Lesser Black-backed Gulls, and 2/3 of the Swedish Common Murre population. A large oil spill close to one of the islands during breeding season could have dire consequences.
