Stora Karlsö Auk Lab

A unique research platform

Within the Baltic Seabird Project, we have the luxury of working with a globally unique research platform for the study of guillemots and razorbills. Jutting from Stora Karlsö’s cliff edge 30 meters above the roiling Baltic, we have built an artificial rock shelf with enough space to host hundreds of breeding birds. The base of this platform rests in the middle of an established Common Guillemot colony, and allows us to study the birds from a distance of bare centimetres – an opportunity seabird scientists around the world can often only dream of!
